Saturday, 9/3/2011 - Backpacking

I went with a group from Girl Scouts on a backpacking trip over Labor Day weekend.

We started our hike later than planned after I got lost and then figured out that I was at the end of the trail, not the beginning. (Oops.) We started at Elk Garden and hiked to Thomas Knob Shelter, hiking near the summit of Mount Rogers.

Luckily the girls decided to stay at the shelter instead of pushing on to our original destination. It POURED down rain, but we were protected under the shelter roof - not still out on the trail!

It was my first shelter sleeping experience. All eight of us were lined up like pencils!

Starting off on the trail.
Yes, there is a cow (and many of its friends) in the field.

Dead pine trees near the trail to Mount Rogers summit.
We saw tons of these trees with berries.

Kathy cooks us a gourmet dinner while sitting in the rain. Thanks, Kathy!
